A Couple of Pears

More fun with fruit. Here's my newest - "Pear Pair." It's a 6" x 8" oil on panel for $60 + shipping.

Find the butterfly...

This piece was not done in a day, but it was just finished. It is an 8" x 10" oil on canvas panel entitled "Butterfly Visitation," and it's the 10th and final piece in a series I painted this year in the Woodman Fen, a peat bog/wetland area of Dayton.

The fen is one of the many wonderful restorations accomplished by the Dayton area's Five Rivers MetroParks. Check out this painting and the rest of my series, which are all posted and (most are) available on my web site: www.klingerart.com. A Painting a Day

Here is the first of what I hope will be a painting a day; we'll see. Its title is "An Apple a Day." It is a 5" x 7" oil on masonite. $50 + shipping.

Residing in South Carolina

I just learned I was awarded a 2011 arts residency in South Carolina by their lovely parks system. I picked the park - now I just have to say when. I lived in the state previously and I miss it sometimes, so it will be great to go back for a bit!

The Glen's Nature Arts & Crafts Show

The Glen Helen 29th Annual Nature Arts & Crafts Show is coming up - 11/20 and 11/21/10 - at the beautiful Glen Helen Building, 405 Corry St. in Yellow Springs, OH, and I'm in it again this year. Hours are Sat. 9 - 5 and Sun. 11 - 5. There is a small admission fee ($4) but it all goes to the Glen - a worthy cause indeed. And there are discount coupons everywhere, including in the YS News and on the Glen's website; I also have postcards with coupons on them. If you want some - just let me know. Shown here is one of the paintings I'll have there, of a scene in the Glen. It's a 12" x 9" oil on panel entitled, "Rock Approach."

Accepted into Regional Sculpture Competition

I had 2 pieces accepted into HxWxD, a regional, juried sculpture competition at Rosewood Gallery in Kettering, OH. On the left is one of my pieces in the show, entitled "Dangling Conversation." The show is up 11/8 - 12/10/10, with an opening reception this Sunday, 11/7, 2-4 pm. Come on out - it will be a good party!

Native Bead Artist at WSU

In my role with the WSU Multicultural Center, I recently installed the artwork of Katrina Mitten of Huntington, Indiana in the Student Union Art Gallery. Katrina is a Native American bead artist who has been beading for over 35 years; she works in the Great Lakes beadwork embroidery style. Her pieces are both contemporary and traditional in design, and she is known for her jewelry, bags, jackets, and her woodland style cradleboards. Katrina has won purchase awards from the Eitlejorg Native American Art Museum in Indiana for a cradleboard and a child's outfit, both of which are now in the museum's permanent collection. The WSU exhibit runs Tuesday, October 26 - Sunday, Nov. 21; I'll be taking it down in the afternoon on Monday.

Fresh Art at Bergamo

I painted recently in DVAC's annual Fresh Art/Fresh Air event, held this year at Bergamo. Those particpating were asked to show their work at Gallery St. John and we happily accepted. The show runs 11/10 - 11/28/10, with a closing reception on the last day, Sunday, 11/28, 2-4 pm. The piece on the left is a little 6" x 8" oil I painted there entitled "Sanctuary" (if you click on it - it gets larger). It is one of the 4 I have on display there now. Also, the piece on the top left of this page is another 6" x 8" oil, entitled "Meadow in Autumn." (If you click on it - you'll go to our web site).

Hispanic Artist at WSU

Through my work at the Wright State multicultural center, I recently installed an abstract painting installation of a Mexican artist who lives in Cincinnati, named Rebecca Nava Soto. Her work is beautiful and very thought-provoking. Her artwork is in the Student Union Art Gallery, and her artist reception will be Thurs., 10/14/10, 12:15 - 1:15 PM in the adjacent Pathfinder Lounge. She will be present to talk about her art, her life and her cultural inspirations. Receptions are always free and open to the public, so come on out!

Here (above) is one of Rebecca's pieces from the exhibit. It is a 4' x 6' oil on canvas titled, "Fish Wade through Black Jade."

1st in the Glen Show!

I attended the lovely opening reception for Glen Helen's 50th Anniversary Art Exhibit and Sale last night (7/2/10). I saw old friends and met new, enjoyed food, wine and music - and won First Place! I'm thrilled, especially since painting from observation is fairly new to me and I had a lot of great competition. Thank you Glen Helen - for everything!

Here (on the left) is a photo I made of one of the 3 paintings I have in the exhibit, titled, "Uphill Trail." It's a 12" x 9" oil on canvas panel and it's the one the jurors liked best. The Glen show will be up through Friday, July 16.

P.S. I also just learned that the Glen has accepted one of my photographs for their wall calendar - it's the one on the left, titled, "Fern Garden." Thanks again, Glen!

Busy with Summer Shows!

Jim is a raku madman with all the art fairs he has lined up this Summer. And I have been painting away and am currently represented in a number of gallery exhibits:

The Glen Helen 50th Anniversary Exhibit, which opens 7/2 and runs through 7/16,
and the DVAC members show, which opens 7/16 and runs through 8/19.

SOLD - Last Chance to Catch It!

A very varied, and very nice, art exhibit (which I am in, ahem) is at the 48 High Street Gallery in Dayton. It's the Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors' Spring 2010 Open, Juried Show, and it's up through this Sunday at 5 pm. So if you still want to catch it - now's your chance. They are just open weekends, Saturday and Sunday, so after Sunday - it will be gone. (Shown here is one of my 2 pieces that got accepted into the show; it's titled "Blues Beach"). The Stranger at WSU

Here's info. on a show I'm curating. Tamaki's exquisitely printed black and white documentary images are intriguing and reveal more every time you look at them. This is a great opportunity to see his work.

Toshio Tamaki is a Japanese-born photographer who has been living in the United States since 1970. He makes images wherever he goes, always, he says, from an alien’s point of view. And although he has returned to his homeland of Japan a few times over the years, Tamaki feels himself a stranger there as well.

Learning and Having Fun

I just returned from a great painting workshop in Florida, thanks to my grant from Montgomery County. I learned a lot and had a great time doing it. Still so much to learn but I'm enjoying the process (but hey, that's what life's about - right?).
